The Board of Executive Directors of Wintershall Dea and the management team in Russia jointly manage the Russian activities.

Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Chief Executive Officer Mario Mehren is responsible for Human Resources, General Counsel, Corporate Communications, HSEQ, Strategy and M&A as well as Investor Relations. After completing his studies in Business Administration at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, he began his professional career in 1998 as specialist adviser in BASF’s Group Accounting section. The business graduate moved to Wintershall in 2006. He joined Wintershall’s Board of Executive Directors in 2011 and has been CEO since 2015.
The Russian business is a very important pillar in Wintershall Dea's portfolio. Russia is the region with the largest planned increase in production in the long term.
Member of the Board, Chief Operating Officer (COO) und Deputy CEO, Region EMEA
Maria Moræus Hanssen is responsible on the Executive Board for the Business Units Germany, Norway, Netherlands, UK and Denmark, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, UAE and Integration Project. The Norwegian studied Petroleum Engineering at the NTNU in Trondheim. From 1992 on she worked for Hydro, Statoil and Aker. In 2014 she became the CEO of GDF Suez and later of its successor Engie. From 2018, Maria Moræus Hanssen was Chairwoman of the Management Board and CEO of DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG.
Member of the Board, Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
Hugo Dijkgraaf is the board member responsible for Digital Transformation, Technology and Innovation, Integrated Reservoir Management, Global Exploration, Global Development and Engineering, Global Production and Operational Excellence, Major Project Nova and Major Project Dvalin. The Dutchman, who has a Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from Delft University of Technology, joined Wintershall in 2000 and since then has held various technical and management positions. Since 2017, he has headed the Norwegian activities as Managing Director of Wintershall Norge.
Member of the Board, Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Paul Smith is the board member in charge of Accounting and Reporting, Corporate Finance and Treasury, Information Technology, Procurement, Corporate Audit as well as Marketing and Sales. The Dutchman studied Business Organisation at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and began his career at BP in Aberdeen in 1993. He then worked for various international companies in management posts. Before joining Wintershall Dea, Smith was CFO and Executive Vice President Corporate Development at Vesta Energy in Calgary.
Member of the Board, Region Russia, Latin America and Transportation
Thilo Wieland is in charge of the Business Units Russia, Achimgaz, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Midstream. After studying Industrial Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, Wieland joined Wintershall Erdgas Handelshaus in Berlin in 1999. That was followed by various posts at the Wintershall Group. Among other things, he was responsible for Nord Stream and other gas transport projects. He was also a member of Wintershall’s Board of Executive Directors from 2015.

Managing Director Wintershall Dea Russia
Torsten Murin has been Managing Director of Wintershall Russia since 2018. He has worked for Wintershall since 2002. After completing the trainee programme and working in different jobs in Kassel, the financial economist worked as financial manager ‒ first in Argentina, later at Wintershall Russia and as deputy financial director for the Yuzhno-Russkoye and Achimgaz projects in Russia. Since 2013 Murin has headed Wintershall’s natural gas infrastructure projects in Kassel.
Our projects in Russia are successful. The collaboration with our Russian partners is based on reliability and trust.
Deputy General Director for Development and Strategic Planning, Severneftegazprom
Aggelos Calogirou started his career at Shell and joined Wintershall in 2010. The chemical engineer with a doctorate held various positions here, including Manager for Development and Exploration at Wintershall Energía in Argentina. Since January 2019 he has been Deputy General Director for Development and Strategic Planning at Severneftegazprom.
Deputy General Director, Achimgaz
Ingo Neubert has been Deputy General Director of Achimgaz in Russia since 2011. The graduate physicist began his career in 1995 at the Wintershall subsidiary WINGAS. Following positions at WINGAS and OPAL, including as Managing Director, he has headed the Strategic Planning department at Wintershall since 2009.
Deputy General Director for Strategic Development, Achim Development
Olaf Reetz has been Deputy General Director for Strategic Development and a member of the Board of Executive Directors at Achim Development since the beginning of 2018. The graduate in business administration joined Wintershall in 2003 and has held various positions, including as Deputy General Director at Achimgaz.
Deputy General Director, Wolgodeminoil
Alexander Steigerwald has been Deputy General Director of Wolgodeminoil since 2018. Prior to that, the mining engineer was operations manager with responsibility for Wintershall’s north German oil and gas production. In this capacity he was responsible for the first practical test with the biopolymer Schizophyllan.
